Anna Katharine Green
About and teaching approach
Anna Katharine Green (1846–1935) was an American poet and novelist, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of detective fiction. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of a prominent lawyer, which later influenced the legal accuracy and realism of her crime stories. Initially aspiring to be a poet, she shifted to fiction after limited success in poetry.
Her breakthrough came with The Leavenworth Case (1878), a highly successful novel that established her reputation and became one of the earliest popular detective stories written by an American woman. Over her career, she published more than 30 novels, many featuring recurring detectives such as Ebenezer Gryce and Amelia Butterworth. Green lived much of her life in Buffalo, New York, and remained a significant literary figure until her death in 1935.
